With a commitment to free and open inquiry, our scholars take an interdisciplinary approach to research that draws from local and international sources, experimental and theoretical approaches; qualitative and quantitative methods; computational models and pencil-based notebooks. Their work transforms the way we understand the world, advancing fields of study, and often creating new ones. Generating new knowledge for the benefit of present and future generations, UChicago research has had an impact around the globe, leading to revolutionary theories of economics and tools to produce reliably excellent urban schooling.

The Practice of Social Science Research: Heather Yoo
This is journalism 101. You have to know and write for your specific reader. How many times did a newsroom editor ask me why a reader would care? Why they would take the time to read my story instead of other stories?
Enjoyed this and also disagreed with his comments about journalists. Good journalists ask questions and research and get their subjects to think, and then they think as they write and weave divergent facts and points or view into a cohesive whole. Maybe he’s referring to a 30 second TV news crime story, but his assessment doesn’t apply to a Sunday front page or magazine story.
I wouldn't be surprised if he is a parallel world walter white.
1:24 It's refreshing to hear someone other than (Cities Skylines) Biffa, especially an esteemed university director, say "chock-a-block" 😁
Thank you for uploading this.
Those this person gives a logarithm about how to confront a white paper, like, sure, you have a topic, now what?.
What did I just watch?!?
I found the article he mentions at 36:57 www.cs.tufts.edu/~nr/cs257/archive/joseph-williams/phenomenology-of-error.pdf
thank you
13:10 😂
terrible.
he gives zero fuks
Nice explanation
good explanation
Anyone who thinks China is the aggressive one is someone who doesn't even know where China and the US are on a world map, and where the American military bases are in western Pacific.
Has Aristotle been preserved? His dialogues are lost and the context of his writing is foreign to us. Not even Aristotle is perfectly preserved
I’m a bit confused. Why does this topic of effective writing apply to graduate students specifically? What writing to which readers is the problem?
May be you are the master of your subject/theories, the writing skill must be need to generate image, illustration and concept in the mind of reader.
Do you anyone got the Text
this video focused on writing in a clear, organized, and valuable manner for readers. McEnerney's insights into words that create tension, such as "anomaly," "inconsistent," and "however," were indeed interesting. Thanks a lot.
But the horrible noise made by the blackboards
Informative lecture
Thanks!
Thank you.
52:25 "The relationship between the suppliers and users of knowledge to the knowledge they supply and use, that is your relationship to your own knowledge, is now tending and will increasingly tend to assume the form already taken by the relationship of commodity producers and consumers to the commodities they produce and consume. That is the form of value."
This has vastly expanded my school of thought in regards to valuable works.
Just make em read Don quixote and have done with it. Jheeze.
Thank you
great & inspiring sharing and learning. Thank you
Thank you.
This is a great lecture.
This was heaven. Enjoyed every second.
Watching in 1994

V informative
Loved this ! Dog gone it, now I need to rewrite my book !

Great value, horrible camera/production varieties value
These university lectures are so unimpressive. Half the time it seems like these tweaky old men get up there with little preparation and the belief that as long as they act interested enough and crack a few jokes, they'll bring value. I do agree that the reader matters most. Those hand-drawn graphs and charts were cringe, but nowhere near as cringe as every time he rushed to slide back to the chalkboard with a drawing of stick figures in a circle... practically useless drawing that he put a lot of emphasis on due to lack of valuable content... weird, I thought it was about bringing value... 🥱
How would the drawing useless? I think it was a good illustration of how the passing of knowledge in society functions and it was a good contrast to the “positivistic” chart he drew to the left of it
Dr. Flanders is out here saving careers
Was he the inspiration for the character of Walter White?
In conclusion: - Your writing isn't about you, it's about the reader.
Thank you very much.
Thanx
Was reading lead article in NYRB. Flying Angels in history of Christianity by an academic published by Yale u. Press. Reviewer of book was a scholar of the subject. Deemed it fluffy. She could judge. I couldn't. "Every community has its own codes". Brilliant.
this is one of those videos you watch twice
Where are the papers they are reading???
Thank you sir
